A plate-built die for multiple corrugations

The patent offers a plate-built die core as an alternative to forming corrugations individually. A base plate and a series of forming plates are connected by bolts, with spaces between the plates defining the corrugation regions. Different plate counts provide configurations for different numbers of corrugations.

The core mounts on sliders in the lower die. A tapered sleeve on the upper assembly engages those sliders to close the tool around the tube. A central seat supports the tube, while the locating guide, locating posts and water inlet provide restraint and fluid supply. Several corrugation positions are contained within this single tool.

The design covers both the multi-corrugation cavity and the hardware needed to close and locate its stacked components. The configurable plates work with dedicated closing and locating mechanisms.

Stacked plates with dedicated hydraulic location

Connecting bolts hold the base and forming plates together. Matching holes in the plates engage locating posts; these are tooling-location features, distinct from the spaces into which the tube wall expands.

The upper assembly contains a base plate, die seat, tapered sleeve and locating guide. Contact between the taper and lower sliders converts downward movement into closure around the tube. Beneath the lower base plate, a hydraulic cylinder moves a crosspiece carrying the locating posts, which engage the plate holes to constrain the assembled core.

Internal pressure expands the tube wall into the gaps between the forming plates. Their number corresponds to the required corrugation count, while the locating mechanism restrains the stack. The forming spaces, tapered closure and hydraulic location are the principal features of the patented die.

Design features

Plate counts matched to corrugation counts

Corrugation positions are distributed between the assembled plates. Changing the number of forming plates provides a different corrugation configuration. Bolted connections retain the sectional core construction, with spaces for several corrugations to form in one operation.

Distinct closing and locating mechanisms

The tapered sleeve and sliders close the die, while the hydraulic cylinder and posts constrain the plate stack. These mechanisms serve different functions and work with the upper locating guide and lower tube seat during forming.
